Search Under the Tunney Bridge: One Person Rescued From Barnegat Bay, Crews Still Looking for a Possible Second (New Jersey Garden News)

Emergency crews searched the waters beneath the J. Stanley Tunney Bridge over Barnegat Bay on Monday after a report that one person, possibly two, had jumped from the Route 37 bridge in Toms River, the Asbury Park Press reported, attributing the account to authorities. The report of two people jumping was called in at about 2:54 p.m. on Monday, November 2.

One person was rescued from the water and taken to Jersey Shore University Medical Center in Neptune, authorities said. Agencies continued searching for a second possible person, and authorities were still working to determine exactly what happened — including whether a second individual had in fact entered the water. No death has been confirmed by any official source, and none is reported here.

The response was a large one. First responders staged at the Pier One Motel & Marina on the mainland side of the bridge, at least three fire boats were on the water, a Toms River dive team took part, and a New Jersey State Police helicopter was seen overhead. The Ocean County Sheriff's Office alerted motorists late Monday to police activity on the bridge and expected delays, though traffic was flowing normally in both directions across the bridge just before 4 p.m. The Tunney Bridge carries traffic onto the mainland from the Seaside Heights area of Ocean County's northern barrier island.
