Is There School on Election Day in New Jersey? For Many Districts, No — and Almost Every School in the State Closes Again Thursday and Friday for the NJEA Convention

'Is there school on Election Day' is the number-two search in the country this morning. In New Jersey the answer runs district by district — Election Day is a state holiday, many districts close because their buildings are polling places, and the NJEA Convention closes nearly all of them on November 5 and 6.

Is There School on Election Day in New Jersey? For Many Districts, No — and Almost Every School in the State Closes Again Thursday and Friday for the NJEA Convention (New Jersey Garden News)

It is the question New Jersey parents are asking the night before the vote, and it is trending nationally for a reason: 'is there school on Election Day' ranks second on this morning's Google Trends US snapshot. The honest New Jersey answer is that there is no single statewide rule for local districts — each district's calendar decides — but the pattern across the state is strong. Election Day, Tuesday, November 3, is an official state holiday observed by state agencies, according to the state's own holidays page, and many districts close for the day, largely because their school buildings double as polling places.

The Essex County calendars show how the day is typically handled. Bloomfield's calendar labels November 3 'Election Day: schools closed,' with a staff in-service day for employees; West Orange shows the same closure; and Montclair treats the day as a professional development day with school closed. Families in districts that do hold classes will see their normal Tuesday — which is why the only safe answer for any individual family is their own district's published 2026-27 calendar, and why this desk names examples rather than declaring a statewide closure that does not exist.

What is nearly universal comes two days later. On Thursday, November 5 and Friday, November 6, nearly every public school district in New Jersey closes for the NJEA Convention, the teachers' convention held in Atlantic City — a two-day statewide break that, combined with Election Day at the start of the week, can put students out on three weekdays in the first week of November, with a regular school day in between on Wednesday. For a family planning the week: check the district calendar for Tuesday, expect Wednesday to be a normal school day, and plan on Thursday and Friday off almost everywhere in the state.
