The Last Voting Deadline Before Election Day Expires at 3 P.M. Today: In-Person Mail-In Ballot Applications at Your County Clerk

A New Jersey voter who wants a mail-in ballot and does not yet have one has until 3 p.m. Eastern today, in person at their county clerk's office, to apply. After that window closes, the remaining routes are a ballot already in hand — or the polls on Tuesday.

The Last Voting Deadline Before Election Day Expires at 3 P.M. Today: In-Person Mail-In Ballot Applications at Your County Clerk (New Jersey Garden News)

One New Jersey voting deadline is still ahead of the state on Election Eve, and it expires this afternoon. Monday, November 2 at 3:00 p.m. is the deadline to apply for a mail-in ballot in person at a county clerk's office for the general election, according to the Mercer County Clerk's official elections page, read by this desk this run, and the same date appears among the New Jersey Division of Elections' remaining key dates in the statewide county-by-county voter guide published by NJ Urban News. It is the final application window of the cycle: the by-mail application deadline passed on October 27, early voting ended on Sunday, and after 3 p.m. today there is no route left to obtain a new mail-in ballot.

The mechanics matter for anyone using the window. The application is in person, at the voter's own county clerk — Mercer County's clerk, to take the official page in hand as the example, runs its elections operation out of Trenton and directs voters to vote.nj.gov for statewide information — and a voter who applies in person can receive the ballot on the spot rather than waiting on the mail, which at this hour is the only version of mail voting that still works on the clock. What that voter does with the ballot afterward runs on Tuesday's deadlines, not today's: a completed mail-in ballot must reach the county Board of Elections or an authorized ballot drop box by 8:00 p.m. on Election Day, November 3, per the same county clerk page.

For everyone else, today's 3 p.m. line changes nothing — and that is precisely its news value. A voter who already holds a mail-in ballot is unaffected; drop boxes remain open around the clock until polls close. A voter planning to vote in person is unaffected; the polls open Tuesday at 6 a.m. statewide. The deadline binds exactly one group — voters who wanted to vote by mail, have not yet applied, and can still get to a county clerk's office before mid-afternoon — and for that group the window is measured, at midday, in a small number of hours. County clerk locations and hours are listed through vote.nj.gov and each county's elections page.
